SOLD - L456 Ruby Red ’67 Beetle

This 1967 Volkswagen Beetle is a red-over-black example powered by a 1600cc single-port, paired with the original four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes pop-out quarter windows, original rechromed bumpers, painted 15″ steel wheels, adjustable front suspension, original 1967 lobster claw seatbelts, and a refurbished Sapphire V AM radio.

This is a California car that has absolutely no rust and has all the original German metal. The car spent time in Santa Cruz in the ’80s before it was brought to Northern Idaho along with three other ’67 Bugs. The previous owner owned a VW shop in Santa Cruz and the car was a part of a purchase that included troves of NOS parts which were used to restore it.

When we got the car, 15 months ago, it had an 8-year-old paint job that still was like new and already had a headliner installed, and was rolling with no motor. We started the restoration by cleaning, painting, and resealing the original transmission and re-installing it. Next, we installed a 1967 adjustable front beam with all new ball joints and tie rods, as well as a new TRW steering box. All the brake components were then replaced, along with original BOGE shocks on all four corners.

The engine is built around an H0 case that needed a new align-bore–so it got a complete rebuild. We used all new German parts in the engine. It’s a 1600cc single port with a new Solex Bocar 30 Pict-1 carburetor as well as a rebuilt German Pierburg fuel pump and the original Bosch 113-905-205K distributor.

The interior of the car got new tar boards put down first, then the original carpet on the heater channels and under the dash. We then installed the rubber floor mats and the original ’67 seatbelts and recovered seats. The doors had been gutted, so they needed to be entirely reassembled with all-new rubbers and felt channels.

All of the electrical has been sorted and everything works and works well–even the AM radio. After the restoration was completed, the Beetle was immediately taken for a frontend alignment.

Although the engine case is period correct, the dates correlated to the VIN show that it likely is not the matching numbers case.

The car came from the factory with an (L620) Savanna Beige paint job and it was repainted (L456) Ruby Red by the previous owner. Since its restoration, the car has been driven about 150 miles and thoroughly checked for any issues. It cruises down the freeway at 65mph with no problem at all. It runs and drives like no Volkswagen I have ever driven.

Despite resealing everything, it has developed a very small oil leak from the engine and transmission, like all VWs do.

When I turned the heat on while driving on the freeway, it deafened the sound of the tires hitting the road and almost created a pressurized capsule. It amazed me! The AM radio completes the entire experience. It honestly drives amazingly smooth, quiet, and like new. This truly is a very special Volkswagen that cannot be duplicated due to its having no rust or collision damage–as well as the fact that it is full of quality , original German parts. The car shows just as good in person if not better than it does in the photos. I have a clean Idaho title and the Beetle comes with receipts of parts which we had to buy, as well as all other documentation for the car.
